The real fee stack for 2027
Ngorongoro is expensive because the fees are layered, and understanding them is the fastest way to spot a quote that has been cut somewhere. These are the current published reference figures for non-East African visitors. They are reviewed annually, so confirm at the time of booking.

Two things surprise people. First, the crater fee is charged per vehicle, not per person, so a group of four splits the same $295 that a couple pays, which is why per-person prices fall as group size rises. Second, permits cannot be paid in cash at the gate. They are bought in advance by bank or card, which we handle for you.
Best mid-range lodges on these safaris
Mid-range in Tanzania means a comfortable en-suite room, hot water, full-board dining and a proper bed after a long game drive. It is the sweet spot: you are out of the vehicle for maybe ten waking hours, so paying crater-rim luxury prices buys a view, not better wildlife. These are the lodges we actually use, subject to availability.

Best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater
The crater is a genuine year-round destination, and this is the single most useful fact for planning. Because the crater walls form a natural enclosure roughly 600 metres high, the resident wildlife does not migrate out the way animals move across the Serengeti. There is no bad month. There are only better and cheaper ones.

If you want the easiest game viewing, come between June and October. If you want the best value on an affordable package, come between March and May, when the same crater costs noticeably less and you may share it with a fraction of the vehicles. If you want both, January and February are hard to beat.
Pack a warm layer regardless. The crater rim sits at about 2,300 metres and is cool all year. Early morning descents are genuinely cold, even when Arusha is hot.
What you will actually see, honestly
Operators promise the Big Five freely. Here is the accurate version, park by park, so you can judge quotes properly.
The crater floor covers roughly 260 square kilometres and holds an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 large animals permanently, including around 60 lions, some 6,000 spotted hyenas, roughly 300 elephants and about 30 black rhino. That density, on open grassland where you can see for miles, is why one crater day beats several days elsewhere.

Two honest corrections worth knowing before you book anywhere. Black rhino are realistically a Ngorongoro Crater animal, not a Tarangire, Manyara or Serengeti one, so any package promising rhino without a crater day is overselling. And there are no giraffes on the crater floor, because the steep descent roads are too difficult for them. You will see them in every other park on these itineraries.
So can you see the Big Five? You have a strong chance of four of them on any package here, with the crater giving you a genuine rhino opportunity. A full day inside the crater
Every package here includes a proper crater day, not a rushed look. This is how it runs, and why the timing matters.
The descent
The gate opens at 06:00 and we aim to be on the floor early. The steep descent road takes about 30 minutes. Early vehicles get the predators before the crowds.
The open plains
Wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and lion, with hyenas active in the cool hours.
Swamp and lake
Hippo pools and Lake Magadi for flamingos and waterbirds.
Picnic lunch
At the designated crater picnic site, usually near the hippo pool.
Lerai Forest and the slopes
Elephants, baboons, and an outside chance of leopard or cheetah.
Ascent to the rim
All vehicles must be out of the crater by 18:00.
The Crater Service Fee buys a six-hour window on the floor, so expect roughly five to six hours of active game viewing. That constraint is exactly why the descent time matters: a guide who leaves the lodge at 8am has already lost the best of your six hours. Ours do not.
Getting there, distances and transfers
All four safaris start and end in Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Circuit. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the nearest international airport; Arusha Airport (ARK) is the small domestic airfield in town.

Good to know before you travel
Passport and visa
Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages for stamps. Most visitors need a tourist visa, best obtained as an e-visa through the official Tanzania immigration portal before travel. Visa on arrival is also available at major airports. A standard tourist visa is about US$50; US citizens are issued a US$100 multiple-entry visa.
Vaccinations and health
No vaccine is mandatory unless you are arriving from, or transiting, a yellow-fever country, in which case a yellow-fever certificate is required. Malaria is present, so take antimalarial medication and use insect repellent. Visit a travel clinic four to six weeks before departure for personal advice, and carry any medication in your hand luggage.
Money and payment
The Tanzanian shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted. Dollar notes should be from 2009 or newer to be taken. Lodges accept cards; carry cash for tips, add-ons and small purchases. Park permits themselves cannot be paid in cash at the gate, which we handle for you.
Tips and gratuities
Tipping is customary and is not included in the price. Around US$20 to US$30 per day for your driver-guide, per group, is typical, plus a small contribution to the lodge staff tip box. Tip in US dollar cash, at your discretion, according to the service you receive.
What to wear and bring
Pack light in a soft duffel bag. Bring neutral-coloured clothing in khaki, beige or olive, layers for cool mornings and the chilly crater rim, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera with spare batteries, comfortable closed shoes, personal medication and some US-dollar cash. A light rain jacket is useful in the green season. If you upgrade to a fly-in, light aircraft limit luggage to about 15 kilograms in a soft bag.
Travelling with children
These safaris are family-friendly. A private vehicle is ideal for children because game-drive timings can be relaxed to suit younger travellers. Child rates apply for park fees and most lodges, and family or adjoining rooms can be arranged. Tell us your children's ages when you enquire.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation. Please carry proof of your policy on safari.
Booking and payment policy
A deposit of 30 percent confirms your booking, with the balance due before your safari begins. Payment is accepted by bank transfer or card, and card processing fees may apply. Cancellations are subject to tiered charges depending on how far in advance you cancel, and date changes are accommodated where possible, subject to availability. Full terms are shared at the time of booking.
