In short

This is our 1-day Mikumi fly-in safari built for groups. If there are between 5 and 20 of you, you get a special per-person rate: $375 (about EUR 329) for a group of 5 to 10, and $370 (about EUR 325) for a group of 11 to 20. You fly out of Zanzibar early, spend the day on game drives in Mikumi National Park with a hot bush lunch, and fly back the same evening. Everything is arranged so your whole group travels together, from the hotel pick-up to the final drop-off.

I am Justus Kahwa, and I run operations at Kai Tours and Safaris. Groups are some of my favourite trips to plan, because a safari is one of those rare days that everyone remembers together afterwards. Friends, families, a wedding party, a club, a work team, they all get on the plane a little sleepy and come back buzzing, comparing photos of the same elephant. The catch with groups is usually logistics and cost. This page fixes both: one price per person that gets better as the group grows, and a single day that we handle end to end so nobody in your party has to juggle the details.

Special group rates

The more of you there are, the better the per-person price. These are the two group bands, all-inclusive of everything listed further down the page.

A note on the euro figures: We price in US dollars, and the euro amounts are a guide that moves a little with the exchange rate. We confirm the exact figure in your currency in writing when we quote your group, so the number you agree is the number you pay.

Why Mikumi works so well as a group day

Mikumi is the easiest of Tanzania's parks to enjoy in a single day, and that is exactly what a group needs. Its open Mkata Floodplain means wildlife is out where you can see it, so you are not spending precious hours searching thick bush hoping everyone in the group gets a sighting. Elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo are usually visible across the grass within minutes of the first game drive, which matters when you have a dozen people who each want their moment.

Flying, rather than driving, is what makes the group day realistic. The alternative is a ferry and a long road trip that eats a full day in each direction and tires everyone out before they have seen a single animal. A flight of about an hour puts your whole group on an airstrip inside the park, fresh and ready, and brings you back to the coast the same evening with the day still feeling relaxed rather than rushed. For a group, that saved time is the difference between a great shared memory and a long, grumpy travel day.

There is also the simple pleasure of doing it together. A safari is more fun in company: the shared gasp when a lion lifts its head, the group lunch under the trees, the swapped photos on the flight home. We lean into that, keeping your party together through the day rather than mixing you in with strangers.

What your group will honestly see

Across the Mkata Floodplain and the surrounding woodlands, groups commonly see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and hippos, and with a bit of luck lions and spotted hyenas. The birdlife is superb too, with over four hundred species recorded in the park, so the keen photographers and birders in your group will be just as happy as the first-timers.

I will always be straight with a group about what to expect, because a whole party is a lot of expectations to manage. Mikumi is a Big Four park. There are no rhino here, and no operator can promise you a guaranteed checklist, because these are wild animals on a huge plain. What I can promise is that your guides know where the wildlife tends to be at that time of year, and that a group day in Mikumi very rarely disappoints. Honest expectations set in advance are what keep a whole group smiling at the end of the day.

Mikumi Wildlife
The open Mkata Floodplain means the whole group gets clear sightings, not a distant blur through thick bush.

Who this group safari suits

Because it is a single, well-organised day, this trip works for almost any kind of group visiting Zanzibar. Some of the parties we run it for most often:

Group typeWhy it works
Families and multi-generational groupsOne shared adventure that grandparents and children can both enjoy, with everyone in vehicles that stay together.
Groups of friendsA brilliant break from the beach that costs less per person the more of you come along.
Wedding and celebration partiesA memorable group outing for guests who have travelled a long way for the occasion.
Clubs, societies and tour groupsA turnkey day we handle end to end, so the organiser is not left managing logistics on the ground.
Corporate and incentive groupsA shared experience that bonds a team far better than another conference room.

The one thing every happy group has in common is an early night before the trip. It is a dawn start, so make sure everyone knows the pick-up time and gets to bed, and the day runs like clockwork.

The Kai group advantage

Organising a day out for a group of people you care about is a job in itself, so we take as much of it off your plate as we can. Here is what a group actually gets when it books this safari with us rather than piecing it together alone.

  • One point of contact. A single organiser deals with one of our team from the first message to the final drop-off, so you are never chasing three different suppliers for flights, park permits and vehicles.
  • Vehicles that stay together. However many Land Cruisers your group needs, they move through the park as a convoy and regroup for lunch, so the party never feels split up.
  • A flexible morning run. Groups rarely stay in one place, so we build the pick-up around your hotels rather than forcing everyone to gather at a single point before dawn.
  • Honest, banded pricing. The rate is set by your group size and written down before you pay. If your numbers shift, the price moves to the correct band and we tell you, so there is never a hidden per-head surprise.
  • Local ground support all day. We are based in Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro, so if a flight time moves or a plan needs adjusting, a real person on the ground sorts it while your group carries on enjoying the day.
  • Multilingual guiding. Mixed-nationality groups are welcome; our guides work in more than one language, so everyone follows the sightings and the stories.

None of this costs your group extra. It is simply how we think a group day should run: organised quietly in the background so that all anyone in your party has to do is turn up and enjoy it.

How to book your group

One person can arrange the whole thing. You do not need every traveller to book separately.

  1. Send us your dates and numbers. Message us on WhatsApp or by email with your travel date and how many are in the group, and we check flight seats and confirm your group band.
  2. We confirm the rate in writing. You get the exact per-person price and what is included, with no surprises, so you can share it with your group.
  3. Secure the day with a deposit. We hold the flights and the safari for your whole party. Card, bank transfer and mobile money are all accepted.
  4. We handle the rest. Pick-ups, flights, park fees, guides and lunch are all arranged. Your group just needs to be ready at the pick-up time.

Group safari FAQ

The special group rate starts at 5 travellers. Groups of 5 to 10 pay $375 (about EUR 329) per person, and groups of 11 to 20 pay $370 (about EUR 325) per person. Below 5 travellers we quote our standard fly-in rate, and above 20 we simply run more than one group on the day.

Return flights between Zanzibar and Mikumi, all park entrance and conservation fees, 4x4 safari vehicles, an expert multilingual guide, a hot bush lunch with bottled water, and all hotel transfers in Zanzibar. Tips, alcoholic drinks, personal travel insurance and personal items are not included.

Your group is spread across enough 4x4 Land Cruisers to seat everyone comfortably with a window and roof-hatch spot. A group of ten, for example, travels in two vehicles that stay together through the park, so nobody is squeezed in and everyone gets a clear view.

Yes. We book your group onto the same scheduled flights out and back wherever seats allow, so you travel together. For larger groups we confirm the seating arrangement in writing before you pay, so there are no surprises at the airstrip.

Yes. If your group is staying in more than one hotel, we plan a pick-up run that collects everyone in good time for check-in. Just send us each hotel and we build the morning schedule around them.

Yes. Game drives are well suited to children who can manage the early start and the time in the vehicle, and travelling as a group is often easier for families. Tell us the ages when you book so we can seat families together and cater the lunch.

Across the Mkata Floodplain groups commonly see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, and with luck lions and spotted hyenas, along with over 400 bird species. Mikumi is a Big Four park; there are no rhino, and we never promise a guaranteed checklist, because it is wild.

The flight takes about one hour, landing at Kikoboga Airstrip near the park. It saves your group a whole day compared with the ferry-and-road option and leaves far more time for game drives.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy-friendly bush lunches can be arranged with notice. Send us the group's requirements when you book and we pass them to the caterer.

One person can organise the whole group. Send us your dates and numbers, we confirm flights and the group rate in writing, and you secure the booking with a deposit by card, bank transfer or mobile money. We keep the lead traveller updated at every step.

If your numbers change and cross a pricing band, for example dropping from 11 to 10, the per-person rate simply moves to the correct band. We confirm any change with you in writing before travel so the group always knows the final figure.

Yes. Because it flies in and out of Zanzibar in a day, most groups slot it into a beach holiday, a Stone Town visit or a longer Tanzania itinerary. We are happy to plan the whole trip around the safari day.
