There are four realistic ways to make this trip, and they are not equally good. Here is how each one actually works (the times, the costs, and the one I steer most travellers toward)
Mikumi National Park : Complete 1Short answer: Mikumi is about 283 km from Dar es Salaam. You can drive the whole way in four to five hours, but for a day trip the better option is the SGR electric train to Morogoro (around two hours) and then a road transfer to the park gate (about another ninety minutes). The train skips the city traffic and the roughest stretch of highway, which is why most of our day trippers use it.
View & Book 1-Day Mikumi SafariPeople are often surprised that you can wake up in Dar es Salaam and be watching elephants by late morning. Mikumi makes that possible because it is the closest big-game park to the city. The catch is choosing how you cover the distance, and the choice matters more than you would think.
I drive and coordinate this route most weeks of the year, so what follows is the practical version, not the brochure version. Four ways in: the SGR train plus a transfer, a private car, the public bus, and a fly in. Each suits a different kind of traveller.
Best Mikumi National Park Packages 2026-2027| Option | Time (one way) | Rough Cost | Comfort | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SGR train + road transfer | 3.5–4 hrs | Train from ~$5 + transfer | High | Most day-trippers |
| Private car / 4x4 | 4–5 hrs | $300 (per vehicle) | Medium–High | Groups, flexibility |
| Public bus | 5–6 hrs | $8–12 | Low | Tight budgets |
| Fly-in (via airstrip) | 1 hr flight | $450 | High | Time-rich, Zanzibar links |
Tanzania SGR Electric Train
This is the one I recommend, and the honest reason is traffic. Leaving Dar es Salaam by road in the morning can eat well over an hour before you have even cleared the city. The Standard Gauge Railway sidesteps all of it. The electric train runs from Dar to Morogoro in about two hours, smooth and air conditioned, for only a few dollars in economy.
From Morogoro you switch to a vehicle for the last stretch to the park gate, roughly ninety minutes on the A7. So the full journey lands at about three and a half to four hours, but it feels shorter because the train portion is genuinely restful. You arrive ready for a game drive rather than worn out from the road.
The reason this matters for a day trip is simple arithmetic. A morning that starts well and a transfer that runs on time mean you are inside Mikumi by mid-morning, with most of the day left for wildlife. That is exactly how our 1-day Mikumi safari by SGR train is built.
Driving the whole way gives you something the train does not: total flexibility. You leave when you want, stop when you want, and you have your vehicle with you at the park instead of arranging transport at Morogoro. For a family or a group splitting the cost, that can make sense.
The trade-off is the drive itself. It is four to five hours each way on the A7, and the section out of Dar can be slow and tiring. Do it as a same day return and you are looking at eight to ten hours behind the windscreen on top of your game drives. Most people who try the round trip in one day tell me afterwards they wished they had taken the train. For an overnight or a longer safari, though, a private vehicle is a fine choice.
Buses run daily from Dar es Salaam toward Morogoro, Mikumi town and Iringa, and they are the cheapest way to cover the distance. If you are travelling on a tight budget and have time to spare, this works to get you to Mikumi town near the park.
Be realistic about what it is, though. The buses are slower, stops are frequent, and timings are loose. More importantly, a bus drops you near the park, not into a safari you still need a vehicle and a guide for the game drive itself, since you cannot walk or use a regular car inside Mikumi. For most international visitors the small saving is not worth the lost time and the logistics at the other end.
Light aircraft do serve airstrips near Mikumi, and flying turns hours of travel into about an hour in the air. It is comfortable and it is scenic. It is also the most expensive option by some distance, and from Dar es Salaam specifically it is rarely the practical choice for a single day.
Where a fly-in really earns its place is from Zanzibar, where the flight replaces a long ferry and road combination and makes a same day mainland safari genuinely easy. If you are starting from the island rather than the city, flying is worth a serious look.
Reasons To Visit Mikumi National Park 2026-2027However you reach Mikumi, you cannot drive your own car or walk around inside the park. Game viewing has to be done in a proper safari vehicle with a licensed guide. So the real question is not just "how do I get to Mikumi" but "how do I get to Mikumi and onto a game drive" which is why a packaged day trip, where the transport and the safari are joined up, tends to be simpler than arranging the legs yourself.
If you have one day and you want it to feel like a safari rather than a commute, take the train. If you are a group that values flexibility and you are staying overnight, drive. If money is the only thing that matters and time is not, the bus will get you there. And if you are coming from Zanzibar, fly.
For the great majority of people asking this question short on time, based in Dar, wanting to see real wildlife without a punishing road day the SGR train and a joined-up transfer is the answer. It is the option we built our day trip around for exactly that reason.
Our 1-day Mikumi safari includes the SGR train, the Morogoro transfer, the park fees, the 4x4 game drives and lunch, so you arrive and we handle the rest. Send your dates and we'll reply fast.
