My name is Justus Kahwa, and I run safari operations at Kai Tours and Safaris. Of all the trips I plan from Dar es Salaam, the three day Selous safari is the one I recommend when someone tells me they want to feel far away from everything. This is not a quick weekend dash. It is three unhurried days in a place that still feels wild, with the time to slow down and let it work on you.

Selous is now part of Nyerere National Park, the largest park in the country and one of the largest protected areas anywhere in Africa. What makes it special is that you can experience it in three different ways in a single trip. You drive the plains in a 4x4. You glide down the Rufiji River by boat. And you walk the bush on foot with an armed ranger. Very few parks let you do all three, and doing them across three days, rather than rushing, is what turns a good safari into a great one.

Why three days is the sweet spot in Selous

People often ask me how long they really need in Selous. You can visit on a quick overnight, but Selous is big and it is wild, and its best moments come to those who wait a little. Three days is the shortest trip that still feels complete. You are not rushing in and straight back out. You settle in for two nights, and you get room to breathe.

Here is what three days gives you. You get a boat safari on the Rufiji, a full game drive on the plains, and a walking safari on foot, so you see the reserve in three different ways rather than one. You get quiet time at the lodge in the heat of the day, which sounds small but matters. And you give the wildlife enough time to show you something, because animals do not perform on demand.

For couples with a long weekend, families who do not want to be away too long, and corporate groups whose time is tight, three days hits the balance. It is long enough to feel far away from everything, and short enough to fit around real life.

Three ways to explore, one wild place

What sets this safari apart is variety. You are not doing the same thing three days in a row. Each activity shows you Nyerere from a different angle.

Road or fly-in, and how I help you choose

There are two ways to reach Nyerere from Dar es Salaam, and on a private safari you get to pick the one that suits you. I will talk you through both when we plan your trip, but here is how I usually explain them.

By road. It is a drive of about four to five hours, and it takes you out of the city and through the quiet country that sits between the coast and the reserve. I like the road option for travelers who enjoy seeing how the land changes on the way, and for families and groups who would rather travel together in one vehicle and keep the cost down. You leave in the morning and you are inside the park in good time for lunch and an afternoon drive.

By air. A short scheduled flight of under an hour carries you from Dar es Salaam to an airstrip inside the reserve. From the air you see the Rufiji River winding through the bush, which is a fine way to arrive. I recommend flying for couples on a tighter schedule, for anyone who would rather not spend half a day in a vehicle, and for corporate groups whose time is short. It costs a little more, but it buys you time, and on a three day trip that time turns into more hours on safari.

Whichever you choose, we arrange every part of it, from the pickup at your hotel to the transfer at the other end. You never have to work out the logistics yourself. That is my job.

The wildlife of Nyerere (Selous)

Nyerere is a vast, uncrowded wilderness, and the animals here feel genuinely wild. Over three days and three kinds of activity, you have a strong chance of seeing a lot. Elephants and buffalo are common. Lions are here in good numbers. Giraffe move across the open ground, and the river is full of hippos and crocodiles.

The reserve is also one of the last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog, and while nothing in the wild is ever promised, Selous is one of the best places in Africa to see them. Add to that some of the finest birding in the country, especially along the Rufiji, and you have a safari with real range.

The Rufiji River ties the whole place together. It is the largest river in the reserve, and almost everything here lives around it, which is why the boat safari is such a special way to see Selous. From the water you watch animals behave naturally as they come down to drink, unbothered by a vehicle, and you get close to the birdlife that crowds the banks.

New in 2026: mandatory inbound insurance for mainland Tanzania

There is one new rule I want every client to know about before they book, because it now applies to this safari. Since 2026, every foreign visitor entering mainland Tanzania, including through Dar es Salaam, must hold a mandatory inbound travel insurance policy to enter the country. Selous sits on the mainland, so this affects you.

The short version is this. The policy costs USD 44 per person, it is valid for up to 92 days, and it covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation and lost baggage. Citizens of East African Community and Southern African Development Community countries are exempt. You buy it online before you travel, or at the point of entry, and you keep the certificate to show at immigration.

To be clear, this government policy is a minimum. I still recommend a proper private travel insurance policy of your own, which covers things like trip cancellation and stronger medical care.

What it costs

This is a private, luxury safari, and it starts from $1,000 per person for a group of two travelling together. The exact price then depends on your group size, your travel dates, and whether you reach the reserve by road or by air. Larger groups pay less per person, because the vehicle, guide and lodge are shared across more people, so a family or a small corporate group works out as better value than a couple. How to book

1. Tell us your plan. Send us your travel dates, the number of travelers, and whether you are a couple, a family or a corporate group. We check availability at Selous Safari Lodge and confirm your all-inclusive price.
2. Pay a deposit to confirm. A deposit secures your booking, your lodge rooms and your park permits. We accept bank transfer, card and mobile money, and we send you a written confirmation with your full itinerary.
3. Arrange your travel documents. Sort out your visa and your mandatory inbound insurance before you fly, and take out your own travel insurance. We guide you through all of it.
4. Arrive and enjoy. We collect you in Dar es Salaam and take care of everything from there, from transfers and park fees to your guide, your activities and your meals.

Our booking policy

• Confirming your booking. A deposit is required to confirm and hold your dates, your lodge rooms and your permits. Until the deposit is received, a booking is a request only and cannot be guaranteed.
• Paying the balance. The remaining balance is due before or on the day your safari begins. We will remind you in good time and set out the exact amounts in your booking confirmation.
• Payment methods. We accept bank transfer, card and mobile money. Prices are quoted per person in US dollars.
• Changes and cancellations. Plans change, and we will always try to help. Cancellation and change terms depend on how close to your travel date you cancel and on the lodge and flight rules that apply to your booking. The exact terms are set out clearly in your written confirmation before you pay, so you know where you stand.
• Children and group rates. Families and corporate groups often qualify for better per-person rates, and we offer child rates on request. Tell us your group and we will price it fairly.
• Travel documents and insurance. Every traveler needs a valid passport, a Tanzania visa where required, and the mandatory inbound travel insurance. Your own comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and, for some routes, required.
• Safety and the itinerary. Your guide may adjust timings or activities for your safety, for weather, or to follow the wildlife. The spirit of the trip stays the same, and we always talk you through any change.

The best time for a Selous safari

Selous is open all year, and I run trips in every season, so it comes down to what you want.

Dry season, roughly June to October. If your main goal is wildlife and long days on the river, this is the time. The bush thins out, the animals gather near water, and the boat safaris are at their best. These are the busiest months, so book early.

Green season, November into March. The whole reserve turns lush and green. The birding is superb, there are fewer vehicles around, and the prices are often gentler. You may get a warm shower in the afternoon, but it rarely spoils a day.

Long rains, April and May. This is the quietest time of year. Some camps close and some tracks get muddy, but if you do not mind the weather you can have the place almost to yourself. Tell me your dates and I will tell you honestly what to expect.

What to pack for three days in Selous

You do not need a lot, but a few things make the three days far more comfortable. I give the same advice to every guest before they travel.

• Lightweight clothing in neutral colours like khaki, olive and beige. Bright white and dark blue are best left at home, as dark blue can attract insects.
• A warm layer for the early mornings. The first game drive and the boat can be cool before the sun climbs, even in a hot country.
• Closed walking shoes for the walking safari, along with sun protection, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
• Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens, so you can reach the wildlife and the birds across the water and the plains.
• Insect repellent for the evenings, and any personal medication you need, since the reserve is remote.
• A reusable water bottle, your passport and visa, and your inbound insurance certificate.
