Arrive Zanzibar, Stone Town

Land on the island and ease into the trip with an afternoon walking tour of Stone Town, the old Swahili and Omani heart of Zanzibar, with its carved doors, spice-trade history and waterfront. A gentle, atmospheric start while you find your feet.

Fly to Arusha

A short flight from Zanzibar to Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Circuit. The rest of the day is free to rest and recover, so you begin the safari fresh rather than tired.

Tarangire National Park

The safari begins in earnest. Tarangire is elephant and baobab country, with large herds moving among ancient trees along the river, especially in the dry season. A full first day of game drives to set the tone.

Lake Manyara National Park

A change of scenery, from the groundwater forest to the soda-lake shore, with excellent birdlife, hippo and the park's famous tree-climbing lions. When water levels allow, there is the option of canoeing on the lake for a different perspective.

Serengeti National Park, with a walking safari

Three nights in the Serengeti, split between the central plains for their resident lions, leopard and cheetah, and, in the migration season, the north for the herds and the Mara River. A guided walking safari, on foot with a certified guide and an armed ranger, lets you experience the bush at ground level, tracks, plants and smaller life you miss from a vehicle. If the migration is your goal, we weight these nights toward where the herds will be for your dates.

Ngorongoro Crater

A descent onto the crater floor, one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, with big herds, lion prides and the resident black rhino, one of the best rhino chances in Tanzania. An optional Maasai village visit adds a cultural dimension to the day.

Materuni Waterfalls & Kikuletwa Hot Springs

A relaxed day at the foot of Kilimanjaro near Moshi: a walk through Chagga farmland to the Materuni Waterfalls, a coffee-making experience with a local family, and an afternoon swim in the clear Kikuletwa Hot Springs. A gentle, sociable change of pace after the intensity of the safari.

A morning at leisure, with the option of an Arusha city tour, then an evening flight back to Zanzibar to begin the beach half of the trip.

The core safari loop, Arusha to Tarangire to Lake Manyara to the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and back, is a logical build-up with no wasteful backtracking, because the crater falls naturally on the return. The cultural days near the end, the waterfalls, hot springs and Stone Town, are a deliberate gentle wind-down rather than an error. That said, if you would rather have more beach time than cultural days, this is easy to rebalance. Tell us your priority and we will weight the trip toward safari, culture or the coast as you prefer.

Three Serengeti nights is a good amount for general game viewing on a trip of this length. Seeing the wildebeest migration, though, depends entirely on the month, because the herds move. From July to October the river crossings are in the far northern Serengeti, and to have a genuine chance of seeing one you want three or more nights up north, not one. In other months the herds are elsewhere entirely. If the migration is a priority, tell us your travel dates and we will weight the Serengeti nights toward where the animals will actually be, rather than promising crossings we cannot guarantee.

It depends on your group size, the season and the level of accommodation, so we quote each trip individually rather than posting a fixed price. A private mid-range trip of this length is a significant but fair investment once you account for the park fees, the internal flights and a private vehicle and guide. This is general guidance, not medical advice, so please confirm with a travel clinic and official sources before you travel. In general, a yellow fever certificate is not required to enter Tanzania if you arrive directly from Europe, or from or via a Gulf hub such as Doha or Dubai, because those are not yellow fever countries and a normal airport transit does not trigger the rule. It is required only if you arrive from or transit twelve or more hours through a yellow fever country such as Kenya or Ethiopia. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for both the mainland and Zanzibar year-round, and hepatitis A and typhoid are the usual recommended vaccines, with routine immunisations up to date. See a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you go.

The dry season from June to October is the classic window, with reliable game viewing and the northern river crossings, and it is peak season for price and crowds. Late January to February is excellent for the calving season and big cats, and the green season from March to May and in November offers lower prices and fewer people with the trade-off of some rain. Zanzibar is enjoyable most of the year, though the heaviest rains fall around April and May. Tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what the wildlife and the weather will be doing.

If you want a longer stretch on the Zanzibar coast, we can trim a cultural day, extend the island stay, or add nights at a beach on the north or east coast. Multi-generational groups often add beach days at the end so everyone can relax together after the safari. Just tell us how you want the two halves weighted.

Look for a licensed, locally registered operator with a real physical address, a verifiable review profile, a published itemised quote and a clear deposit and balance structure through traceable payment rather than a wire to a personal account.
