Wildlife and Culture, Properly Balanced
Most operators treat a cultural visit as a 20-minute stop bolted onto a transfer day. This itinerary gives it a full day instead: a real morning with a Maasai boma, then on to a Datoga blacksmithing community near Lake Eyasi in the afternoon, before returning north to the Ngorongoro highlands. It costs one day that a pure wildlife itinerary would have spent driving anyway, and in exchange you get two of Tanzania's most distinct living cultures rather than a photo stop. The wildlife side isn't shortchanged either: a full day at Tarangire, a full crater floor morning, and two full days in the Serengeti's Seronera region, enough time for your guide to actually find and follow the wildlife.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Pick-up from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport, then drive around 2 hours south-west to Tarangire National Park. Spend the afternoon on a game drive searching for elephant herds, ancient baobabs, lion, giraffe and buffalo along the Tarangire River. Dinner and your first night in the bush.
Day 2
After breakfast, drive to a Maasai boma, where you'll meet the village elders, tour a traditional homestead, watch the adumu jumping dance, and learn about boma-building and beadwork. From there, continue to Lake Eyasi with a picnic lunch en route, spending the afternoon with a Datoga community watching blacksmiths hand-forge jewellery and tools, and learning about their traditions. Continue to Karatu for dinner and overnight.
Day 3
An early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full morning game drive, searching for lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and the resident black rhino, with a picnic lunch on the crater floor. In the afternoon, ascend and drive to the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate, with a game drive en route to your camp. Dinner and overnight in the central Serengeti.
Day 4
A full day of game drives in the Seronera area, with an early morning drive for the best light and the most active predators, followed by exploring the Seronera River for leopard and resident lion prides, and the kopjes and open plains for cheetah. Dinner and overnight in the central Serengeti.
Day 5
One final Serengeti game drive at first light before breakfast and check-out. Depart for Arusha, driving back via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Karatu, roughly 6 hours including a lunch stop, with drop-off at your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Timings are a guide and flex with the season, road conditions and the wildlife.

Best Time to Travel
This trip runs year-round. June to October is the easiest for general game viewing, though the busiest. January–February calving season brings intense predator action to the southern and central Serengeti. March–May and November are quieter, greener and better value, and the crater and cultural visits are excellent in any month.
Good to know
- The Ngorongoro Crater rim sits at around 2,300m and is genuinely cold at dawn — pack a warm layer.
- Malaria is present across the route; take antimalarial precautions.
- A Tanzania e-visa is recommended in advance; visa on arrival is available at JRO.
- Ask permission before photographing individuals at the Maasai and Datoga communities.
- The Lake Eyasi road includes some rougher, unpaved sections; a 4x4 is used throughout.
- Tipping is customary: budget roughly US$20-30 per day for your guide, plus a small contribution for the community guides.
