LICENSED TANZANIAN OPERATOR • FLY-IN SAFARIS FROM ZANZIBAR
Kai Tours and Safaris is a licensed Tanzania-based operator running Ngorongoro and Serengeti fly-in safaris from Zanzibar. Meet the team, see every package and price, and check us against the questions you should ask any operator.
Kai Tours and Safaris is a licensed Tanzania-based tour operator, headquartered in Dar es Salaam with teams working across Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. We are not an overseas reseller. We run the vehicles, we employ the guides, and we hold the relationships with the lodges and the park authorities ourselves. For travellers on a Zanzibar beach holiday who want the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, we coordinate the whole thing under one confirmed itinerary: hotel pick-up, the flights, the permits, the 4x4, the lodges and the return. Fly-in safaris from Zanzibar start at US$1,650 per person, with the domestic flights and the US$295 crater fee already included.
Booking a safari from another continent, to a country you have never visited, with a company you found online, is an act of trust. We would rather earn it with specifics than adjectives. Here is what we actually offer, each of which you can check.
Headquartered in Dar es Salaam with teams in Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. When your flight shifts or the weather turns, the person fixing it is a few hours from your vehicle, not a call centre in another time zone.
Fly-in safaris from Zanzibar involve a domestic flight, an airstrip transfer, park permits, a 4x4, lodges and a return flight. We hold all of it. You get one confirmed itinerary and one point of contact, not four suppliers who blame each other.
The Ngorongoro Crater Service Fee is US$295 per vehicle. It is the single most common thing cut from a cheap quote. Ours includes it, along with every park and conservation fee, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
On every fly-in package starting in Zanzibar, the return domestic flights are in the price. If you are comparing us with a cheaper quote, this is usually the difference.
The crater permit allows six hours on the floor and the gate opens at 06:00. A guide who leaves the lodge at 08:00 has spent a third of your permit on the access road. Ours do not. That timing knowledge is worth more than any lodge upgrade.
A same-day Ngorongoro trip from Zanzibar is not physically possible, and we say so rather than sell you a disappointment. If a shorter or cheaper package suits you better, we will point you to it.
Kai Tours and Safaris is a Tanzanian tour company. Wildlife safaris are our main focus, and we run them across the country: the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara on the Northern Circuit, and Mikumi and Nyerere in the south. Alongside those we arrange Zanzibar beach holidays and island tours, Kilimanjaro climbs on the Marangu, Machame and Lemosho routes, cultural trips and day excursions.
Our specialism, and the reason this page exists, is the link between the two halves of Tanzania that most visitors think they have to choose between. You can be on a Zanzibar beach one morning and on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater the next. We built our fly-in range around exactly that.

A safari company is its people. Vehicles can be hired and websites can be copied, but the difference between a good trip and a great one is the person driving and the person answering your messages at 11pm.
Safari Operations Manager
Plans and runs the Northern Circuit and Zanzibar fly-in programme, from permit timing to lodge selection. Justus is the person who decides what time your vehicle leaves for the crater gate, and why.
Professional, English-speaking
Tanzanian guides who work these parks week in and week out. They know the crater's seasonal rhythms firsthand rather than from a script: where the rhino tend to graze in the dry months, which forest track the big bulls use, when to stop moving and wait.
Moshi and Zanzibar
The people who answer your WhatsApp. They hold the lodge and permit relationships, build your quote, and stay reachable while you travel. Enquiries are usually answered with a confirmed quote within a few hours.
This is the part people underestimate. A Ngorongoro safari from Zanzibar is roughly 700 kilometres of moving parts. Here is everything we handle so that you do not have to.
| Stage | What we handle |
|---|---|
| Before you fly | Itinerary design around your existing beach dates, quote, booking confirmation, packing and visa guidance |
| Zanzibar departure | Pick-up from your beach hotel or Stone Town, transfer to Zanzibar Airport, check-in support |
| The flight | Return domestic flights, booked and included in your price |
| On arrival | Your guide meets the aircraft, with your 4x4 Land Cruiser and pop-up roof ready |
| Permits and fees | Conservation area entry, the US$295 crater service fee, all park fees, purchased in advance by bank or card since permits cannot be paid in cash at the gate |
| On safari | Game drives timed around the 06:00 gate and the six-hour crater window, picnic lunches, bottled water |
| Lodging | Mid-range lodges and tented camps, or a luxury crater-rim upgrade on request, full board |
| The return | Transfer back, return flight, and drop-off at your Zanzibar hotel |
| While you travel | A local team reachable on WhatsApp throughout, able to act on the ground the same day |
Your luggage stays on the island. Light aircraft limit you to about 15 kilograms in a soft bag. Leave the rest at your Zanzibar hotel and collect it when you come back. We arrange this with your hotel as part of the booking.
We would rather you read these somewhere we cannot edit them. Our reviews live on Tripadvisor, alongside travellers' own photographs from their trips. A few of the things guests have told us there:
"A traveller who took the fly-in safari from Zanzibar to Mikumi described the private transfer and flight as first class, and the game drive as beyond expectations, having seen elephants, lions and a leopard, followed by a bush lunch under a baobab."
Paraphrased from a Tripadvisor review of a Mikumi fly-in from Zanzibar
"A guest who booked a five-day Tanzania safari praised the team and the professional guiding, and singled out the standard of service and accommodation."
Paraphrased from a Tripadvisor review, October 2024
"Another guest travelling to Morogoro noted that we arranged everything, including their rail booking and ground transport, rather than leaving them to piece the trip together."
Paraphrased from a Tripadvisor review

We would rather explain our price than defend it. Ngorongoro is expensive because the fees are layered and unavoidable, and when a quote comes in far below everyone else, the money has come out of one of these lines.
| Fee | Amount | Charged |
|---|---|---|
| Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry | ~$70.80 per adult | Per person, per 24 hours |
| Crater Service Fee | $295 per vehicle | Per descent, valid six hours |
| Conservation tariff if sleeping inside the area | ~$59 lodge, ~$34.50 campsite | Per person, per night |
| Return domestic flights from Zanzibar | Several hundred dollars | Per person |
Many safaris sold online are not run by the company selling them. An agent takes your booking and passes it to a Tanzanian operator, adding a margin. Nothing is inherently wrong with that, but it changes what happens when something moves.
| Feature | Kai Tours, a local operator | An overseas reseller |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs your safari | Us. Our guides, our vehicles | A third party you have not met |
| When plans change | Decided locally, the same day | Relayed through an intermediary |
| Lodge relationships | Direct with the properties | Through a booking platform |
| Response time | Usually a few hours on WhatsApp | Office hours in another time zone |
| Margin | None added by a middleman | Reseller margin on top |
| Who answers at 6am | Your guide, and our operations team | Nobody, until their office opens |
Being asked to wire a deposit to a company in East Africa makes people nervous, and that instinct is healthy. So rather than ask you to trust us, here is the checklist we would use ourselves. Apply it to us and to everyone else you are considering.
Ask for the tour operator licence and verify it. Tanzanian operators must be licensed. A real one will hand you the number without hesitating.
Check how far back the reviews go, not just the score. A brand new page with perfect scores tells you less than a modest page with history. Ours is on Tripadvisor, with travellers' own photos.
Look for independent listings. A company that exists only on its own website is a flag. We are listed on tourHQ under operator ID TZ97070.
Confirm a physical address and a working phone. Call it. We are at +255 672 530 415, and the same number is on WhatsApp.
Ask for a video call. A genuine operator will happily show you the office and the vehicles. We will.
Check the deposit terms. A 30 percent deposit is normal in Tanzania. A demand for 100 percent upfront is not.
Test their knowledge with a hard question. Ask whether a one-day Ngorongoro trip from Zanzibar is possible. The honest answer is no, and an operator who says yes either does not know the route or is willing to sell you a bad trip.
Get the inclusions in writing. Specifically the flights and the crater fee. Verbal assurances are not a quote.
We publish this checklist knowing it invites scrutiny. That is the point. An operator confident in its answers has no reason to hide the questions.
Every conservation and park fee in your quote goes to the authorities that protect these places. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry fee and the crater service fee fund the ranger patrols that keep roughly thirty black rhino alive inside the caldera, and the Ngorongoro model is unusual in that Maasai communities live within the conservation area alongside the wildlife.
We employ Tanzanian guides and staff, use Tanzanian-owned lodges wherever the standard allows, and route our optional cultural visits, to Maasai bomas and to the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi, through the communities themselves so the fee reaches the people hosting you. On the ground our rules are simple: no off-road driving, no crowding animals for a photograph, no feeding wildlife, and out of the crater by 18:00 as the rules require.
Send travel dates, group size, Zanzibar hotel, and priorities.
We check availability and send an exact, all-inclusive price.
Check our licence, vehicles, and guides using the checklist above.
A 30 percent deposit confirms the booking. Balance due before safari.
Flights, permits, transfers, and lodges are arranged under one itinerary.
Tell us your Zanzibar dates and we will build the safari around them with return flights and crater fees included.
